This is a classic "Lady's Hand" door knocker, a design with deep roots in French and Mediterranean folklore.I t is missing the brass door plaque where the ball hits the metal.
History & Symbolism
  • The "Hand of Fatima": In France and Southern Europe, this design is often referred to as the Main de Fatima (Hand of Fatima). It is a symbol of protection, believed to ward off the "evil eye" and bring good luck to the household.
  • Victorian Style: This specific version—a delicate feminine hand with a ruffled cuff and a ring on the finger—became immensely popular during the Victorian and Napoleon III eras (mid-to-late 19th century).
  • 🇫🇷 The French Transformation
While the original Middle Eastern symbol is a flat, stylized palm, the French version is a realistic, 3D feminine hand.
    • The Ring:  a ring on the ring finger. In French tradition, this transformed the symbol into a "Hand of Welcome," representing the lady of the house.
    • The Cuff: The ruffled sleeve or "lace" cuff at the wrist is a classic 19th-century French design touch, making it look like a high-society lady is knocking.
    • The Ball: The hand is almost always holding a ball or a "pearl." In folklore, this represents the moon or a secret, adding to the mystical, protective quality of the piece.
